Happy Tuesday.... I was in Portland, Pa this week, that's Northampton County for a memorial service for a friends father.
I stopped at Riverview Cemetery, on Church Street. I took some photos of the cemetery and then focused on the StJohn family monument. The large Urn on the monument was used widely, some times dropped or veil is a classic cemetery symbol. The stone was large compared to others in the cemetery.
Adolphus St John was born about 1833 in Canada. He is the son of John and Ardelia. He and his father are counted twice on the 1850 census. The first time he is listed as age 17 and is listed with his father living in the Cook family home.in Otsego, Fulton County N.Y. this was taken on 5 Sept 1850 they are both listed as being born in Canada His father occupation and his is Stone Cutter. The 2nd time taken 30 Sept. 1850 he is listed as 16 and living with his family in Onondaga, NY.His family has listed as John, Ardela,(1824-1888) Leon (who is blind), Mary. Their neighbors are all also stone cutters its possible that particularly, James and Janet Revery born in Canada are related to the StJohns. The census does not ist if they speak English or French. Adolphus lists he was born in France in the 1900 census
In 1854 he meets and gets married to Caroline Mann-Brands. he moves to Upper Mount Bethel, Northampton Co., Pa where he is a farmer and laborer. I wonder why if he was trained as a stone cutter that he decided to become a farmer? Maybe an injury? They have daughters Adelaide and Charlotte.
Caroline Mann was married to Jacob Brands (?-1853)who has a will made 2 June1852 in Warren Co., N.j. Some of their children are
Adolphus dies 26 August 1900 and is buried with Caroline at River View Cemetery, Portland, Northampton co., Pa.
