buried at Shawnee Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Yates, a successful artist in his day, was part of the New York art scene. Born in Ohio in 1866, he studied in Paris, had studios in New York and was a resident of artist colonies in Old Lyme, Conn., and Ogonquit and Monhegan Island, Maine. Yates and his family settled in Shawnee-on-the-Delaware in 1910, encouraged by Charles Worthington who was hoping to establish a summer artist's colony with Yates as the resident artist.
