Sarah Blackford Hill, Millbrook, warren co., NJ

SARAH BLACKFORD HILL
Happy Tuesday, When I started my research this week on Sarah, Almost two days was spent on her husband. I could not STOP reading about Uriah Hill (1794-1863) The name alone “Uriah” made me want to see if that was a family name or not. Uriah Hills family was a well-established family in Putman County NY. His grandfather was Andrew Hill a Major in the American Revolution. Andrew served under Col. Abraham Brinkerhoff commissioned June 1778 he was assigned to the 2ng Ref. of Duchess County NY Uriah parents were William and Abigail Knapp Hill. The answer is Yes, Uriah was named after Andrews's brother.
Sarah Blackford was born on 22 July 1800. Probably in Stillwater, Sussex County, N.J.I like the surname Blackford sounds very Jane Austen, it is very English. Her parents John (1772-1842) and Hannah (1780-1864) Snyder (Snider) Blackford. The Blackfords can trace their roots in New Jersey to at least 1710. Sarah and Uriah work on the farm in Walpack, Sussex Co.,NJ In the 1850’s I find a Elias Troger (Traugher) also listed as a farmer living in there house, he must be the husband to July Ann or Ann.
Sarah and Uriah's children: Andrew and July Ann I can not find any proof of Michael, he is listed on some family trees as being born in 1811? If Sarah was born about 1800 she did not have a child at 11. He also does not fit into any of the naming traditions on either side of the family. Andrew a stonemason, dies 4 Nov. 1884 in Galesburg, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan.
Sarah dies 6 April 1886 in Walpack and is buried in the Millbrook Cemetery, Warren Co., N.J. it is thought that Uriah is also buried there but there was no stone with his name present, and it's hard to tell if it's on Sarah's stone buried under the earth

Annie Lapinska 1924-1924 Millbrook Villiage, NJ

I braved the 15-degree temperature...Yes Winter has finally come to Pennsylvania, but I was in New Jersey and even though some think Jersey is a foreign County were also having winter. Old Mine Road was OPEN! yes still in crap condition and icy in spots I made my way to Millbrook Villiage.  I had gotten direction a number of time from different sources and  I started down the path in July. but turned around when the weeds were over my heard and yes I have tramped through worse than that but, I'm older and sometimes wiser! Also, I'm afraid of TICKS! All conditions were perfect for my cemetery search and the cemetery at Millbrook was found, the sun was perfect for photos.

I want to talk about Annie Lapinska, she was born in 1924 died in 1924, hers was the first stone I came upon when I got to the top of the hill. I spent 4 hours doing research on this child and could not even find out who her parents were or where she came from. In the 27 years that I have been doing research this has never happened to me!!!  I went back to her broken stone a number of time and my dog sat by it for a long while also. There were gravesite details at Find A Grave that stated: According to photos in Millbrook church, the family once lived in the Elias Garis house and the stone was found on the path to the cemetery. I did a census search of Elias and have not found the Kapinska family or Annie.
I can guess that the family name is Polish or Russian, Elias was a farmer so the family could have been boarder/farmhands. I am looking for any information. Thinking of Annie today and celebrating your life little angle.

IF YOU VISIT: Go when its winter, to many ticks, snakes, weeds 10 feet tall and women eating brier bushes in the summer. Great map: https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/2166068/millbrook-cemetery/map. for those who hate maps and don't understand the GPS App.....straight threw the village follow the path, there were actually stakes with orange flags on them when I was there. There are trees down in the path so yes...BOOTS and long pants, bug spray even in the winter. Pass the first abandon building and the corn crib(no not kidding) and when you see the school turn up the path on the right. take your walking stick

Sarah Dornblaser Ming Keokee chapel, Paradise Valley, pa

Good morning and happy Tombstone Tuesday, today were are celebrating Sarah Doprnblaser Ming. It always amuses me, while randomly taking a picture in a cemetery that I can come home with 5 pictures of one cemetery stone. While I was at Keokee Chapel Cemetery, I did just that with the stone of Sarah Dornblaser Ming. I could not identify who was on the stone. I asked if anyone could identify her on the Tombstone Tuesday site. My classmate Kevin Stiff knew her name, Kevin has also taken a number of photos at the cemetery, and done his own research.
Sarah is born 30 January 1844 was the daughter of Peter (1814-1903) and Mary Siglin (1820-1913) Dornblaser. Peter and Mary settled in Paradise Valley, Paradise Township, Monroe County, Pa where he was a carpenter. The family name is found in Canada and the U.S.A. between 1840-1920. the interesting fact is that five Dornblaser families were all living in Pennsylvania by 1840. This is 100% of all the recorded Dornblaser in the U.S.A. All Dornblasers in the USA (including Dornblazers and Dunblaziers) descend from Christian Gottlieb Dornblaser (b. May 24, 1726). A detailed genealogical study of the Dornblaser family can be found in Vol. 65 No. 1-4 of the American Genealogist published in 1990.
Sarah marries Nelson Ming (1846-1881) when she is about 16 and they move to Auburn, Susquehanna County, Pa They live with his parents William and Elizabeth, Sarah a housemaid and Nelson working on the family farm. Sarah and Nelson move back to Pennsylvania when their son Cyrus William Ming is born on 20 March 1869 known as C. William Ming he dies in Lehigh county on 30 October 1950. I can't find Sarah in 1870 but Nelson is working in New Jersey.
Sarah dies 8 March 1876 and is buried at the Keokee Chapel Cemetery near her parents. Peter and Mary raise Cyrus. Nelson leaves for the Dakota Territory and gets married again to a woman named Mary E. He died 9 March 1881 and a memorial stone is placed in the Jersey Hill Cemetery, Susquehanna County Pa.

Reuben Coffman Keokee Chapel

I was walking around Keokee Chapel Cemetery last week, and i saw this stone leaning on the back of the church. I immediately wanted to know who this was, matter a fact I ignored it when I couldn't really read it but went back a few more times to look at it. I did a search on findagrave and could not figure out who he or she was. Then thanks to the new programs they have to manipulate photos I figured out the last name was Coffman. The stone looked to be about 1870-1890, so i did a census search for 1850 and that is when I knew it was Reuben.
Pvt Reuben W. Coffman was born 12 August 1843 and died 10 April 1896. He served in the Grand Army of the Republic Company I 214 Regiment or the Pennsylvania Volunteers. He was the son of John and Catherine Woolbaugh Coffman a farmer in Paradise Township. John a farmer died in 1870. Reuben return from the war to help is mother, Catherine (1822-1900) work the farm. His Pa. Veterans Burial Card does not list that he was married. it does say that he was buried in Row 1 Plot A. his siblings: Jno, William, George, James, Fianna, Alice, and David.
If you visit: The address 279 Keokee Chapel Ln, Paradise Valley, PA 18326 the older stone surround the church. Please beware of small ground heaves and broken stones. Trip hazards every were.
Dale Berger and Jeffrey L. Thomas have put an extensive web site together of who is who in theis silent town. http://www.thomasgenweb.com/keokee_cem.html

Benjamin and Sarah Ace Courtright

BENJAMIN COURTRIGHT
When I was walking around at Zions Lutheran, Middle Smithfield Township, Monroe Co., Pa. a few weeks ago I saw this stone for Benjamin Courtright. I took this photo because I was interested in identifying who was buried next to him.  I didn't know at the time He was married to Sarah Ace. I'm always hopeful that I will find the Elizabeth Ace who had a child with a Benjamin Stunk, alas I knew who Sarah Ace is. Benjamin is Don Kintner 1st cousin 5x removed.
Courtright is one of those surnames that has been spelled a number of ways The Dutch: KORTIJK, I see is more often spelled KORTRIGHT in records of the 1700's also CURTWRIGHT. Here are a few others: Cartwright, Cartright, Cartwrite, Carthright, Kartwright, Kartright, Cartrite, Kartwrite, Chartwright, Cartrite, Catherick, Cartrait, Cartray, Ceterith, Cateray, Cautheret, Carterwright, Carterright, Carterrite, Chartright, Chartwright, Cardwright and many more.
Benjamin was born in New Jersey Oct 1806 he was the son of Abraham and Blandeah Kortright.  He spent most of his life as a stonemason and this is how he met Sarah Ace (1812-1879) She was the daughter of Jonh George & Barbara Boney Ace. Her brother Peter Ace (1789-1872) who lived next door to them while he lived in Middle Smithfield Township was also a stonemason. Benjamin and Sarah’s family were: George, b. April 1, 1831 Catherine b. Sept. 16, 1832 Anna b. Jan. 11, 1835 Oliver b. May 30, 1837 Moses b. Dec. 4, 1838 Susanna b. Nov. 10, 1841 Mary b. Apr. 8, 1844 John b. Nov. 11, 1845 (my great grandfather) William b. Apr. 5, 1850 Samuel b. Oct. 29, 1851 Jacob b. Feb. 10, 1853. When i was researching Benjamin, I found another Benjamin Courtright who lived in Plaines Township, Luzerne Co., Pa. who had a will probated in 6 July 1865, some think its the same man, but reading his will says differently.
Benjamin died June 1863, he and Sarah are bother buried at Zion cemetery. She has no stone. the stone next to his is of his son George who died in 1862.
If you decided to go to Zions Lutheran Cemetery, be prepaid to walk up a steep grade. Located north side of River Rd., on Churchill Road, just off River Road, 9 miles northeast of township line, approximately 4.2 miles northeast of the Shawnee on Delaware crossroads, in Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, Shawnee on Delaware vicinity. Cron, Kern, Bellevue

It’s 2020, I repeat it again 2020…#tombstonetuesday I decided to start my new year off right and clean off my desk. Going through all those tiny pieces of paper I have. Smirk...I run across a note regarding a book; All Roads lead to Milford by Skip Gregory and Andy Leiser 2007. WHAT????... What a good way to NOT clean off the desk! A quick search in the card catalog @ Hughs Library and they have a copy at Smithfield library. Off I go, to read and enjoy this book that just takes you there very well written and informative. Since the main street of the town of Dingmans Ferry, Pa. went by by when the Tock Island project acquired or stole all the land depending on who you talk to. I have been interested in where the different builds where located in the town.
The Bellevue hotel a small boarding house which stood on Main Street could accommodate about 25. They like other hotels at the time sold fresh air, farm-fresh

food, and clean water. A Jas. Frick was the proprietor according to an advertisement in 1892. In the 1900 W.E. Kern and P.F. Mercier owned the Bellevue. It was thought that either of them could have built it, I'm thinking added on to it most likely.
In 1941 Fred Cron, a native of Dingmans Ferry, Pa, his parents Alonzo (1872-1955) and Caroline Martin (1886-1976) marries Ann Vanwinkle (1906-1973)born in New Jersey. Both are buried in Delaware Cemetery, Pike co., Pa. They would be the last owners of the Bellevue. They decide to remodel the hotel and discover a trunk in the basement. The trunk was filled with sketches and a notebook and charts of the 1840’s Fremont Expedition, belonging to the Kern brothers. So as you can imagine the thought of running home to clean off my desk was far from my thoughts!!! Who are the Kern brothers???? and what happened.
The Crons turned the artwork over to the Bank of Matamoras where they were stored and later sold to Harvard University. It was thought by Skip Gregory W.E. Kern was a nephew to Richard, Edward, and Benjamin Kern.
John Fremont was an American Explorer, he led five expeditions into the American West. I have a link below, fascinating man. So which one was the Kerns brother on? Edward Meyer Kern (1822-1863 see picture) his namesake is Kern River California, Richard Kern (1821-1853) and Benjamin Kern ( 1818-1849 was a doctor. It would seem the brother would join Edward on his expeditions. They were the sons of John Kern lll and Mary Elizabeth Bignell of Philadelphia. Edward was on the third expedition and the fourth with Fremont., he served as a cartographer and sketched landmarks. On one of Edwards's drawings, he documents Fremont's party murdering 30 Northern Paiute Indians. The papers the Crons discovered were used by David Weber for his book on Richard Kern. According to Wikipedia the diary and papers can be found at the Beinecke Rare Book and manuscript Library, part of Yale University. The W.E. kern was probably William born in 1812-about 1879 he was a drawing teacher and a brother. Benjamin and Richard were murdered by Indians in 1849. Edward is buried in Philadelphia, Pa.
