Mary Jane Everett Hardy

My cousin Michele Wescott Morris was visiting this week and our lunch conversation turned to our ancestors. I had sent her a number of photos from my grandmother’s photo album of her grandfather Kenneth (keck) Hardy (1917-1971) in the 1940’s. I was trying to give her a rundown of the family line but failed miserably without the tree in front of me. Forgetting about the conversation I stopped at the Oakland Cemetery in Mountainhome, Pa. and was tending to my great great grandparents grave as promised to my cousin Beverly. My friend Jackie Mcgann, of the Barrett Research Center let me take a look at the map recently.

Most researcher think our connection is the Harrison/ Hardy Line and it is….. BUT, YES there is a BUT, we also have a connection threw the female line and it starts with my great great grandmother she was Barbara Everett Strunk (1854-1900). Her sister was Mary Jane Everett Hardy. this can get very confusing very fast so i am going to try to stay with Mary Jane.

Mary Jane Everett was born 17 October 1852/1854 in Middle Smithfield Township. She was the first of seven daughter born to John and Rachel Howey Everett. Her father a farmer and lumberman, her mother a midwife and healer. Their other children Barbara ( my great great grandmother), Delia, Emma, Sarah, Matilda, Malvinia, Claressa. A side note is I have never found any information regarding Emma, Sarah and Matilda. The Everetts stuck with German family naming traditions, Rachels mother was probably Mary and Johns mother was Barbara.

The family moved to Porter Township, Pike co., Pa in 1870. Since they lived in Middle Smithfield the boarder could have just changed. Porter Township was not former until 1851. Mary marries John Hardy in about 1873 and they move to Barrett Township in 1880, were they live the rest of her life. Her children: George, Charlie, Carrie May, Catherine (Kate) (who marries Wesley Harrison), Joseph ( 1884-1957 my cousin Michele ancestor), Cleveland, Lawrence, Frank, Lulu, Lillian.

Mary Jane dies of old age 20 Nov 1940 and is buried next to her husband in Oakland Cemetery, Mountianhome, pa.

Mrs Mary Jane hardy 88 years old widow of John Hardy died yesterday at the home of her daughter, Mrs William Englert at Cresco. she was a native of Smithfield Township, Monroe County, and spent all her life in the vicinity of Cresco. She was a member of the Mountainhome Methodist Church.

Mrs Hardy is survived by four sons, Joseph, Cleveland and Clifford all of Cresco, and Frank of Analomink; four daughters, Mrs Englert with who she resided; Mrs Charles Reisenwitz and the misses Catherine and Lillian of East Stroudsburg;22 grandchildren eight great grandchildren and two sisters Mrs George Kindrew of Bossardsville and Mrs Elmer Heller of Buck Hill.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 2 P.M. at the Mountainhome Methodist Church in charge of the pastor the Rev. Milliard R. Meredith, assisted by the Rev. T.M. VanVleck of Cresco and interment will be in Mountainhome Cemetery

To simplify the hardy /Harrison question; Mary Jane and Barbara Everett daughters; Kate and Daisy marry Harrison brothers, making them cousins and sister in laws. That’s enough to make your head spin.

I also want to add this these families spent a lot of time together, as evident even today, the family is still getting togather. It has been a very large genealogy mystery for me in many lines but these are the ones I am currently working. Im always looking for help, as in concrete proof. The parents Rachel Howey??? The Howey line has been extensively gone over and no luck on this John Howey. I have looked for the parents of Elijah Strunk???? He used the surname of Ace for 30 years even my own grandfather was not sure of their sur name along with the federal government. And William Harrison who where his parents. There is large holes in the parents of John Hardy also.

Luther Sebring Canadensis Cemetery, Canadensis, Pa

Luther Sebring

     I did a quick stop at the Canadensis United Methodist Cemetery over the 4^th of July weekend. The cemetery located on 447, had a tree come down over the winter and they recently cleared it so I wanted to get a look around. I did a quick walkthrough, I was looking for a Reinhart family stone, which is in the back left. I also appreciate the number of good wishes for the holiday and the horn tooting.

Luther Sebring, his stone is in the front left as you enter the cemetery. He was born 11 November 1845. I think his stone is the earliest in the cemetery. His father Harrison Sebring (1824-1893) is buried near him. His mother Ann Rhodes Sebring (1832-1916) is buried in Oakland Cemetery, Mountainhome, Pa.

Luther would have been a perfect age to be drafted for the Civil War, I didn’t find his name on any of the list. He moved to Bradford County Pa in about 1877, He married Georgia Ann Henry(1860-1923) Georgia married a 2^nd time to Martin Wright.   He makes his home in Grover, Canton Township where his profession is a Cooper (a maker or repairer of casks and barrel)  His first child Laura was in born in 1879 and a second Lulu in 1888.

Luther dies on 26 June 1890.

Elizabeth Botham Banks, Albright/ Bennett Cemetery, Greene Twp., Pike Co., Pa

Elizabeth Botham Banks,

I've thought a lot about Elizabeth for the last few weeks. I found her stone, her monument in pieces. A few weeks ago when I was exploring the Albright/Bennett Cemetery in Newfoundland, Wayne Co., Pa. Considering it was placed there 165 years ago, I was intrigued as to who was Elizabeth.

The monument is in the back of the cemetery in the older section and it is metal, not zinc like others, but steel. I've never seen a stone like that. It's not set apart from the others. Still very readable considering its age. One side reads Let me die the death of the righteous and let my last end be like his. The monument tells a lot about her, In memory of Elizabeth. It sounds like the monument was placed after she died “In Memory” or that her body was not at this spot. She was the “consort” of William, Banks. I think very British to hear the word “Consort”. According to Dictionary .com it is defined as a husband or wife, especially of a reigning monarch. I can't find any information that William or Elizabeth was royalty.

Elizabeth died 25 January 1854 it states she was 72 years of age so she was born in about 1782. I did find William and Elizabeth and their son Samuel Banks on the 1850 census for Greene Twp., Pike co., Pa. William is listed as a farmer. More research finds them immigrating from England. A

passenger list for the ship Georgiana docking in Philadelphia, Pa. on 23 May 1843.

The passenger list la number of Banks family members, I'm not sure who is who, but it looks like the whole family must have come. William 55, Elizabeth 60, Benjamin 42, Joseph 42, William 26, Ann 29, Sarah 27 Martha 25, Elizabeth 19, Mary 16, Samuel 20 (named on the census) and James 22.

YES, a clue!! Samuel named on the census and passenger list may be their son so I do a search on him, and find the marriage banns for 19 Nov 1811, Hemsworth, St. Helen, Yorkshire, England for Elizabeth Botham daughter of Thomas and William Banks.

I also found the original deed for 99 acres in Greene Twp., Pike Co., Pa. Transcript

William Banks arrived in the United States on the ship "GEORGIANA" on May 23, 1843, as shown by the following: Philadelphia Passenger List: Name: William Banks Arrival Date: 23 May, 1843 Age: 55 Years Estimated Birth Year: abt 1788 Gender: Male Port of Departure: Liverpool, England Ship Name: Georgiana Port of Arrival: Philadelphia, PA Listed with William is: Elizabeth, 60; Benjamin, 42: Joseph, 42: William, 24: Ann, 29: Sarah, 27: Martha, 26: Elizabeth, 19: Mary, 16: Samuel, 20: James, 22. The Rev. William and Elizabeth Banks, the former a cabinet maker and local preacher, came to this country in the interest of the Howe Company, land agents residing in England, and paid William Fitzwilliam Howe one dollar ( $1.00) for a deed to 100 acres of land. The Original deed was recently found by Linda Storm-Noble and Gloria Genest when they were cleaning out the house of Myrtle G. Banks, their Mother, Iola May Banks' Aunt. The deed is now in the hands of William S. Banks. William is the son of Samuel E. Banks, the brother of Iola May Banks. The deed reads in part as follows... "This Indenture, made the twentieth day of the 3rd month (March) in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty seven, BETWEEN William Fitzwilliam Howe of Aspley House in the County of Bidford in England, gentleman, Robert Howard of Tottenham in the County of Middlesex also in England, a Manufacturing Chemist, John Hodgkim of the same place formerly of Lincoln's Inn in the same County, Barrister at Law, and Alfred Janson formerly of Tottenham aforesaid but now of Walthuminstoro in the County of Essex also in England, underwritten of the one part, and William Banks of Green Township Pike County Pennsylvania..... of the other part, WITNESSETH, That the said William Fitzwilliam Howe, Robert Howard, John Hodgkim, and Alfred Janson, for and in consideration of the sum of ONE DOLLAR, lawful money in the United States of America, unto them well and truly paid by the said William Banks at and before the sealing and delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, HAVE granted, bargained, sold, aliened, enfeoffed, released and confirmed, and by these presents DO grant, bargain, sell, alien, enfeoff, release and confirm unto the said William Banks, his Heirs and Assigns, That piece or parcel of Land or Ground being Number Three in the Map or Plan drawer on these presents and situate in Green Township, Pike County, Pennsylvania and containing Ninety Nine acres and one hundred and twenty perches ( more or less) . ......... I am very happy to tell Elizabeth story. It seems the Banks family, were early settlers to Pike County. William dies sometime in 1860 and Im guessing but he is probably buried or was buried near Elizabeth.
